What is Your Vaping Style?

Before we get too focused on the styles of vaping it is important to know that it does not really matter which style you adopt as long as the experience is enjoyable and satisfies your needs.

When buying a vape you will often be asked “What type of vaping experience are you looking for?” but what exactly does this mean.

A vaping style is the way in which you inhale the vapour from the device, which sounds ridiculous but there are in fact 2 different methods.

Mouth to Lung (MTL) and Direct to Lung (DTL)

Mouth to Lung (MTL)

Much like smoking a cigarette this style of vaping is a 2-step process. In the first step the vapour is drawn from the device into the mouth. In the second step it is then drawn down into the lungs after a slight pause. Although the reality is this 2-step process all happens as one smooth motion for the majority of us without even giving it a second thought.

The nicotine uptake when MTL vaping is faster than when smoking tobacco as the vapourised nicotine starts to absorb into the blood stream via the mucous membranes of the mouth whereas when smoking tobacco, the nicotine uptake does not begin until the smoke is drawn into the lungs.

Mouth to lung vaping is the most comfortable starting point for many transitioning smokers as the devices run a lower power wattage and have been designed to mimic a slightly restrictive experience similar to smoking.

The most popular devices suited to MTL vapers are the low powered pod or pen style devices which generally has a resistance of over 1 ohm.

Direct to Lung (DTL)

Exactly as it sounds this style of vaping involves the vapour being directly drawn from the device into the lungs without pausing in the mouth. This single smooth motion of drawing on the device direct into the lungs is often utilised by more advanced vapers who have progressed from MTL devices and are seeking a more satisfying hit.

The cloud lovers of the vaping world who love great big plumes of vapour favour this style and often use higher powered devices with lots of air flow.

Devices best suited to DTL style vaping are the high-powered mod and sub ohm tank set ups with a resistance of less than 1 ohm and have adjustable power and airflows settings.

The jury is out on which style of vaping gives the best flavour experience as this ultimately comes down several factors.

• The ratio of PG / VG in the juice
• How long the vapour is held in the mouth when vaping MTL
• If the exhaled vapour is expelled via the mouth or nose.

At the end of the day there is no right or wrong way, it comes down to personal preference and what feels right for you.
